Geography

The Koryak Republic is located on the most northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

History

Scientists believe that America was populated by hunters and nomads from Eurasia who became the ancestors of all the indigenous people in America, and that Kamchatka, specifically its northern part where the Koryak Republic is located, was part of the route.

When the first Russian settlers came to Kamchatka, they found the most ancient tribe of the Ittelmen, who were still in the Neolithic stage of their development, the Chukchi and the Evensk, who were reindeer hunters and breeders, and the Koryaks, the largest tribe of the region.

16k The name Koryak is derived from "khora" reindeer as that was their main occupation. Koryaks are then subdivided into Nymylans and Chachuvants. The Nymyians settled along the rivers and sea shores. Their main occupation was fishing. The Chacchuvants lived in the tundra breeding reindeer. Modern civilization has dramatically changed the lives of the native people, although some are still clinging to their traditions.

Ecology/Environment

The Koryak Region includes the grandeur of the cold of the north and the abundance of natural phenomena. The fascinating taiga landscape welcomes you with colors from red to yellow and green dotted by azure colored lakes and rivers. The slopes of the cone-shaped hills are covered with cedar and birch. Brown bear are widespread through the area. Other areas feature moose, big horn sheep, foxes, martens, sables and polar foxes. On the shores you can find walruses and seals.
