The Lazovsky PreserveThe Lazovsky Preserve (Zapovednik) covers 121,000 hectares in the southern part (Russian Maritime Provinces) of the Primorsky Krai between the Kievka and Milogradovsky rivers. The nature preserve also includes the Belisov and Petrov islands. The latter island is famous for its unique Yew grove and is called a Natural Arboretum for its variety of endemic plants. The territory is located on the southern spurs of the Sikhote Alyn Mountains and because of it exhibits many climatic zones. Complex mountain relief, abrupt changes of heights, its proximity to the Sea of Japan create a rich diversity of vegetation. It is possible to view plants that regularly exist in broad-leaved forests, taiga, tundra, steppe and even in subtropical climates. More than 40 species listed in the Red Book can be found in the preserve, including 169 endemic and very rare species. Fauna in the preserve includes the Temminck's Cormorant, the mandarin duck, the fish-duck, Eurystomus orientalis, the bluish trush and the black stork. Birds like the green dove, the black griffon and the Japanese starling are only found in this preserve. As far as the animal world is concerned, the population of the Amur Tiger and the Amur goral is the highest in the Primorsky Krai. Other species such as the Asiatic black bear, Amur wild cat, sika deer, gigantic shrew can be found in the preserve.
