Kamchatka, a Hidden Paradise

Expedition Cruising
Vladivostok- Sakhalin
Expedition Cruising
From Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the Commander Islands

June 30/July 9, July 18, 2007 (ten days, nine nights)
Costs start at $5,540, both international and domestic airfare not included

Highlights: There is only one road in Kamchatka going into the interior. This means untouched nature is only accessible either by helicopter or by ship. Even more so, the Commander Islands, sometimes shrouded in fog for days, are not accessible at all, other then by expedition vessel. Yet, this inaccessibility also creates opportunities to observe and explore areas that so far have had limited visitation. The Commander Islands are famous for its seal rookeries and incredible birdlife. One of the islands is even called "Puffin Island'. Kronotsky State Biosphere Preserve is the other high point of the trip. This beautiful protected area is one of the strictest preserves in the Kamchatka region and first established for the preservation of the sable. Towering volcanoes surround geological wonders that are one of a kind. Our stops though are on the shorelines of this preserve, allowing us to look for the Kamchatka brown bear and observing its rich birdlife.

Logistical details: You will fly in either from Moscow, Vladivostok or Khabarovsk to the point of entry for Kamchatka, Yelizovo. There you will both begin and end your trip. World Wise Ecotourism Network offers both pre and post trips in the Kamchatka region. Some sample trips are listed in our schedule

The cruise will be operated by Poseidon Expeditions, an experienced Russian cruise operator. Assistance in Kamchatka will be offered by ExploreKamchatka.

Introduction

Kamchatka is generously endowed with national treasures and is an alluring and exotic place even for Russians. The unique combination of fantastic landscapes and rare wildlife makes this far away region of Russia a "Promised Land" for exploration. Some of the highlights of Kamchatka include a multitude of spectacular dormant and active volcanoes, rich and unique wild, marine and birdlife, astounding even the most jaded travelers. A large brown bear population that equals or towers over the amount of bears in Alaska. Six protected areas that offer one of kind treasures: some of them well known such as the Kronotsky State Biosphere Preserve located in the northeast of the Peninsula with its Valley of Geysers and Uzon Caldera. And, of course the famous Commander Islands where Captain Bering died and George Steller started his writing about the rich flora and fauna of Kamchatka.

Since Kamchatka has only one road going into the interior, and then only to the middle of the peninsula, the only way to visit the most scenic and off the beaten path places, is by ship. Similarly, a visit to the Commander Islands, because the weather in summer can be extremely foggy, might take months and that is staying there waiting for your helicopter to pick you up. So again, only in this manner is it possible to circumnavigate these spectacular islands.

Our Russian vessel has an ice hardened hull and is build for expedition travel. Of course, this is not a luxury vessel, but a vessel that is perfectly suited for Far Eastern waters. The management, staff, crew and naturalists are all Russian and they know these islands well. They have had long term experience in expedition cruising in northern Russia.

Please, note! Passengers should keep in mind that this is a unique expedition to a remote and little explored part of the globe. Our sample itineraries should therefore be read as a guide only, depending heavily on weather conditions, as well as on other circumstances. The landing sites, listed in this itinerary, might be changed, should insurmountable obstacles (such as unsuitable weather conditions, governmental and administrative orders) occur... Nevertheless, our Expedition Team will do their best to accomplish as many landings as possible, taking good care of your exploration time.

Itinerary

Day 1, Saturday
Petropavlovsk

After your arrival in Petropavlovsk, after a short excursion around the city embark your expedition vessel in the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In the evening we leave port for our Kamchatka adventure.

Day 2, Sunday
Zhupanova River

Your first destination is the Zhupanova River. Many bird species have found shelter near this shallow river. You'll enter the river by zodiac. Or you may be dropped off on the shores of the Zhupanova River for a hike and the possible observation of several Steller Sea Eagles nesting in the area. In the afternoon, you sail eastwards - to the Commander Islands.

Day 3-5: Monday through Wednesday
Commander Islands.

The Commander archipelago consists of two main islands Bering Island and Medny (Copper Island) and a dozen or so small rocky islets. The islands are named in honor of the well known explorer - Commander Vitus Bering. And as usual there is tragedy and heroism connected to geographical names of remote and difficult to access lands, such as these. Vitus Bering was the first explorer who discovered that Asia and Americas were separate continents. During his explorations he mapped the west coast of Alaska - thus making a great contribution to science. He sacrificed his life for this discovery: Vitus Bering died and was buried on the island, which was named after him - Beringia Island. We plan to visit his grave marked with a tombstone.

Your two days on these islands will be full of discoveries and surprises. Most likely, you will have never seen so many breeding grounds of sea mammals: there are four large rookeries on the islands counting thousands of Fur Seals, Eared Seals, Steller Sea Lions, Sea Otters and Spotted Larga Seals. Also hardly ever might you have seen mushrooms growing higher than trees: an incredible number of mushrooms late in summer rise above dwarf birches and willows.

Both of the islands belong to the Kommandorsky Nature Preserve. In 2002 the preserve was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The surrounding waters provide habitats for several whale species (Sperm Whale, Killer Whale and Humpback Whale are among them), including one of the rarest whale species - Stejneger's Beaked Whale.

Huge numbers of sea birds have found their home on the Commander Islands such as: Red-faced Cormorants, Glaucous-winged Gulls, Northern Fulmars, Tufted and Horned Puffins, Pigeon Guillemots and more. You will visit several different bays, each of them exhibiting their own uniqueness. There is a beautiful waterfall in Gladkovskaya Bay, spectacular rocks in Bobrovaya Bay, and numerous nesting places of Thin-billed and Thick-billed Murres on ladder-like rocks in Dikaya Bay.

Day 6, Thursday
Kronotsky State Biosphere Preserve

The coastline of the Kamchatka Peninsula between Cape Kamchatsky and Cape Shipunskiy offers great exploration opportunities. You start our exploration here with the picturesque coasts of Kamchatsky Sound. This is your chance to spot large Kamchatka Bears wandering around the mouths of local rivers flowing into the Kamchatka Sound. The southern border of the sound is part of Kronotsky State Biosphere Preserve. The preserve offers incredible landscapes dotted with a number of active volcanoes, noisy bird colonies, and picturesque waterfalls flowing down from rocks.

We plan to anchor at Kamenistaya Bay to make it possible for you to observe nearby rivers with rich birdlife. Abundance of fish in local rivers attracts Kamchatka Bears. We will try to cruise around the mouths of these rivers on our zodiacs in order to make it possible for you to take spectacular photos.

Day 7, Friday
Kronotsky State Biosphere Preserve

Today you start your exploration with a landing at Olga Bay - also part of Kronotsky Preserve. The Kronotsky Preserve biodiversity includes a variety of landscapes including: coastal tundra lowlands, forest and shrubby highlands and volcanic mountains with glaciers. Only at the Kronotsky Preserve, is it possible to see Kamchatka Fir (Abies gracilis) growing naturally. Many species of mammals live in the preserve, such as: Ermines, Gluttons, Otters, Red Fox, Sable, and a large population of brown bears, Big Horns, and the only wild Reindeer Herd on Kamchatka. The coastlines are the prime habitat for Sea Lions and Ringed Seals. Birds found in the preserve include: Woodpeckers Bullfinches, Thrushes, Cuckoos, Black-billed Capercaillies, Rock Ptarmigans, Willow Ptarmigans, Waterfowls, and White-tailed Eagles.

The Kronotsky River is undoubtedly worth your attention. It flows out of the well-known Kronotsky Lake, in the middle of the preserve. In the evening we plan to call at Shipunsky Peninsula.

Day 8, Saturday
Shipunsky Peninsula

On your next stop you will be able to explore the numerous northern fjords of the Shipunsky Peninsula. The peninsula is famous for its picturesque views and spectacular birdlife. Exploring these fjords aboard our zodiacs is a one of a kind experience. Our expedition team will do their best to make the most of your time here!

Day 9, Sunday
Vilyuchinskaya Bay

Vilyuchinskaya Bay is your next landing site. It is known as a habitat of the rare Steller Sea Eagle, the biggest eagle in the world

Starichkov Island also offers you an excellent chance to observe bird colonies. This island is favored by the residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Day 10, Monday
Petropavlovsk, Kamchatsky

On the way to the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky you may be able to observe the beautiful coastlines of Avacha Bay, including its surrounding volcanoes: Koryaksky, Avachinsky and Kozelsky. The citizens of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky call them Domashniy (Home) volcanoes, as they watch this volcanic landscape every day from their home's windows.

We anchor at the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Having disembarked, you may wish to take some optional excursions in the city and its suburbs or take your flight home - it will depend on your own after-trip schedule.

Her two sister ships were named "Boris Pasternak" and "Anna Akhmatova" after two contemporary poets of Marina Tsvetaeva. From the very beginning "Marina Tsvetaeva" was meant to transport passengers across the Arctic seas during the summer season.

Completely refurbished in early 2005, she is now able to comfortably accommodate up to 115 passengers for expedition cruising to remote areas of our planet. A fleet of zodiacs accommodates landings in wilderness areas.

The passenger cabins are spacious and cozy. And the public areas (including the bridge, library, lecture room and bar) are great places to read a book or to communicate with fellow passengers. A sauna and open-air swimming pool with heated water offer additional recreational possibilities.
