Nature Preserves

The biggest treasures of Eastern Russia besides its people, are probably the nature preserves (zapovedniks). These territories which are spread all over Eastern Russia, do not allow economic activity and are primarily used for research. By law, the nature preserves may be visited only by scientists and small groups under their direction.

However, since the current economy of Eastern Russia has been putting a strain on the budgets to maintain the nature preserves, some of the preserves have cautiously opened their doors to eco tourism programs which are usually are operated in cooperation with a tour operator and a scientist who may be a biologist, ornithologist or involved with marine biology.

We have been fortunate enough to work not only with World Wide Fund for Nature/Russian Far East on building eco tourism programs in the nature preserves in the Primorsky and Khabarovsky Krais, we have also worked very closely with the Kurilsky Nature preserves and the Kronotsky Nature Preserves in Kamchatka.

All of the preserves offer the eco traveler an opportunity to observe wilderness in its most pristine form. Most of the preserves have endemic species of birds, plants or wildlife, not found anywhere else. While these travel opportunities may not appeal to every one, the intrepid traveler will come back enthused and committed to preserve these great wondrous areas of the world.

The information contained in this part of the Web Site represents only a small part of the information, we have available. We also have many brochures, birding lists, etc. which we are glad to send to you upon your request. Also, if you have traveled to the preserves and would like to add comments, please do not hesitate to send them to us.
